Pearls of the Club

Respect is what we owe; love, what we give.

 - Philip James Bailey

Notes From the March 9th Meeting
President Paul Munk welcomed Club members, guests Quinn Ryan, President-Elect of the Mundelein Club, who led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance,. and the Four Way Test.

Announcements:

From the President:
Calendar items: There is a Board meeting following this meeting.
-  There is NO MEETING next Monday. We will be gathering on Thursday, March 19th at 28 Mile Vodka Company for a TABU fundraiser and socializing. Please RSVP, if you have not already done so. See details below (in green for the Irish!):

Coronavirus. There is no new news from Rotary International who is monitoring the coronavirus outbreak.  The best medical advice is to avoid large public gatherings and wash hands frequently.

District Training Assembly, Harper College, March 28th at 8 AM - PETS prepares and inspires presidents-elect to lead their clubs. Dale is attending that this weekend.  The next, most critical, step is building a team and setting direction.  That requires training, ideas, and collaboration.  And that’s what the District Training Assembly on Saturday, March 28, will provide: District Assembly registration opens today Monday March 2. If you’re new to the board come July, I urge you to consider attending

Public Image Matching Grant:  Deadline for application extended to June 15th. We received this $250 Grant back in December, but we are yet to receive the check, so I confess I don’t know the cause of the delay.

Change in Gala Theme: As you know our original plan was to dedicate that evening to honoring Dan and Rhoda Pierce. With Dan’s passing and the public service scheduled for the day following our Gala, it obviously didn’t make sense to go down that path. So our new theme for the evening is “Power of Youth Service”, and we will feature the faculty advisors that enable this to take place, with our support, both in District 112 and District 113. Northwood Gives Back, and Interact.

Incidentally, Paul has been contacted by Deerfield Rotary – they want to start an Interact Club at Deerfield HS. I haven’t had the conversation yet, but trust me when I tell you that I will stress the importance of the right faculty sponsor/advisor.

Environmental Task Force:  New area of focus for Rotary -newly formed: The Environmental Task Force is composed of ten Rotarians passionate about the environment who are available to serve as a support and resource to your club. I would like for our club consider participating, and I am still looking for a volunteer member who would act as a liaison with this group and be our environment champion. Interested – let me know

The Day's Program
Quinn Ryan, President-Elect of the Mundelein Club spoke to our Club about the Boy Scouts of America.

The Boy Scouts of America is a 110 year old organization going through a lot of change. They have welcomed young women into their programs since 1971 even earlier than that through the Campfire Girls program. They have expanded their participation in every aspect of their programs starting in 2018. BSA welcomes girls ages 5 – 20 in various programs throughout the Scouting family. Since the inclusion of girls into the programs their membership has grown from 38,000 girls in Cub Scouts (5 – 11 years old) in 2018 to 123,000 in 2019 and we registered 35,000 young ladies in Scouts, BSA programs (11-17) in 2019.

Quinn began his career with BSA upon graduation from Carthage College where he majored in Environmental Science. He did leave the Boy Scouts to be a Resident Counselor at Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy for 3 years before being lured back to BSA as a Program Director right here in Highland Park in 2016. He is currently serving as District Director at Northeast Illinois Council, Boy Scouts of America
