The Day's Program
K9 Reading Buddies of the North Shore was founded in 2007 after founder, Carole Yuster, experienced first hand the comfort therapy dogs can bring while her mother was hospitalized ten years earlier. Comfort dogs gave by the ICU daily for ease the anxiety she and other patients' families. Her mother encouraged her to get a dog for Carole's young son and the rest is history as they say. Several dogs and years later, Simba is Carole's partner. In K9 Reading Buddies, "the team" (dog and handler) visit schools from pre-school to high school to listen to students read stories to them. Dogs don't laugh or pass judgement, so children gain confidence in their reading as they read aloud. Since the Fourth of July shooting, K9 Reading Buddies has been sprinkling their special calming magic dust at our schools, churches, libraries and even at the HP Park District day camps to ease the anxious feeling so many children had being separated from their parents. They are partners with the Highwood Library and Family Focus. Twice a month they work with children at Nuestro Center. Suzie Raskin has been with K9RBNS for several years and helps Carole with presentations while she waits for her puppy to mature a bit more before becoming a Reading Buddy!

We missed those of you who couldn't make it - we hope to see you soon!

This and That
Last Wednesday in February - SaLT Students

Brad and Ida provided a great opportunity for the students and the students provided an impact speech on their trip to DC but also reminded us of the other work that is being done with Shop n Drop (which is continuing to grow additional families) including refugees from Ukraine. So donations are needed to continue to provide these groceries and other supplies to local families. Finally, some parents got to speak and shared the impact that Rotary is making in their children’s lives and the community. Brad, Ida, the students and parents all thanked Rotary Club for our ongoing support and partnership with SALT, Interact and Shop n Drop.

Thank you Mike Babian!

Here are what the SaLT students had to say:

“IT WAS A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE, AND I WILL NEVER FORGET MEETING WITH
MEMBERS OF CONGRESS. I WILL WORK TO PASS WHAT I HAVE LEARNED TO OTHERS IN MY
LIFE,” SAID IMAAN BOKHARI (HPHS JUNIOR).

HANNAH AZYMAN (HPHS SOPHOMORE) SAID, “IT WAS AN HONOR TO MEET WITH OUR
MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, AND I WAS INSPIRED BY THEIR COMMITMENT AND PASSION FOR
SERVING OTHERS.”

“THIS TRIP WAS ONE OF THE MOST IMPACTFUL EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. I HAVE A
NEWFOUND RESPECT FOR THE DIFFICULT WORK OF GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS,” SAID
DANIELLE SANANES.

“I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE WORK OF OUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS IN THE EFFORTS OF
GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION. THIS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF EVERYONE IN
OUR COUNTRY,” SAID LILI RICHTER.

Thank you to Paul Clements for these quotes!
