Laura Frey is the Senior Services Manager for the City of Highland Park and recently began managing operations at the Highland Park Country Club. She shared with us the many activities and programs available not only for the seniors, but many are also open to the public! Social opportunities for seniors is important to keep them active mentally as well as physically. Becoming a member of the Senior Center is quite beneficial and fun. Senior Adult Prom, St. Patrick's Day Party, Valentine's Day Luncheon are sure to be part of a senior's busy calendar along with viewing films followed by discussions and the humanitarian series where the world of Winston Churchill and the history of candy in Chicago will be discovered. Day excursions vary from casino outings to performances at Lyric Opera to museum trips. The Monday Speaker Series provides many topics from poetry and presentations of historical people, safety and financial and physical aspects pertaining to senior living. Classes for Seniors encompass art, games, and exercises; registration is required for many of these. Some activities like Wii Games are free while others have fees. The Senior Center also partners with a variety of local theater and concert venues to offer their members specially negotiated discounted tickets. Aside from classes, excursions and discussions, social services are available to HP seniors. Support groups, well being checks and help with insurance are just some of what is offered. The Senior Center is located at 1701 St. Johns Avenue. Laura was born and raised in Highland Park. She graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor od Science in Leisure Services and became a Certified Leisure Professional in 1999. She has held positions with the focus of community services in the Wheeling Park District and the City of Lake Zurich Recreation Department prior to coming to Highland Park in 2001. |
