Pearls of the Club

We meet no ordinary people in our lives. If you give them a chance, everyone has something amazing to offer.

 - Ryan Seacrest

Notes From the January 27th Meeting
President Paul Munk welcomed Club members and led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance.and the Four Way Test.

Announcements:

Paul thanked those members who came to the MLK Day of Service to make bookmarks for Rebecca's Dream - Ghida Neukirch, Paul Clements and his lovely daughter, Len Tenner, Karen Dennis, Jon Levey, and Mike Babian!

OUR NEXT MEETING:  February 3rd at Bella Via, 1899 Second St. Parking is available across the street or in the underground garage.

You should have received an email from Paul about RSVPs for meetings. It is a change, but an accurate headcount is needed to help control meal costs. An email from the website will be sent each Tuesday or Wednesday by noon. You are asked to RSVP by Friday noon. We would hate for you to not RSVP, show up and there not be any food for you!

A decision regarding a future meeting place should be by the end of the week.

District News:

In San Diego last week, the International Assembly the Environment is now an Area of Focus - one of Rotary's organizational priorities. More details as they become available. Paul intends to find out more and get the Club involved.

The International Assembly also announced the 2020-2021 presidential theme - Rotary Opens Opportunities. Rotary isn't just a club for people to join, but rather "an invitation to endless opportunities."

Polio cases in 2019: Pakistan - 135 cases; Afghanistan - 28 cases as compared to 2018 when Pakistan noted 12 cases ad Afghanistan, 21.The great news is that Nigeria has had ZERO new cases of polio in 3016, 2017, and 2018. That country will be declared polio free this spring! Action Item: The Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation will again match Rotary donations 2:1! They have pledged $50 million.

Happy Dollars
Happy dollars were given by: Mike Mills for his jokes; Karen Dennis in honor of our speaker, Highwood City Manager, Scott Coren; Paul Munk gave $75 in honor of the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz's Liberation. His father was liberated, but he lost 40 family members in the Holocaust.
The Day's Program
Our guest speaker was our very own Scott Coren, City Manager of Highwood. He's been on the job for five and a half years. Prior to that, Scott was in City Administration in Darien, IL for close to 10 years. He is a proud graduate of Miami of Ohio, and holds a MS degree in Public Services Management from DePaul.

This was Scott's fourth presentation on the State of Highwood to our club. This year he was excited to have photos instead of just plans.

Highwood has received funding for an extensive renovation of Everts Park, allowing for better utilization of the space. Kids in Highwood will now be only a seven minute walk to a splash pad or Lake Michigan!

There are three apartment developments in process.  The former Bertucci's Restaurant will have 31, mostly one bedroom apartments and some retail space.  There are now plans for 40 one bedroom and efficiency apartments on the former  Scornavacco's site (Washington & Green Bay Road). Finally, the City has an agreement for 49 apartments/no retail on the old Yiannis Opa site which the city purchased in 2012.  Scott had handouts with photos of all this exciting development in Highwood.

He also said that Highwood has decided to get into the marijuana market now rather than later.

Thanks to Karen Dennis for her notes!
