Michael Lubelfeld shared with the Club his recent trip to Guatemala with his 15 year old son Justin for about 10 days this summer. Together with about 15 others who were a part of Hug It Forward, they helped to build walls with discarded water bottles stuffed with other plastic refuse for another school in the small village of Zaculeu which has a climate of 60 degrees everyday. The bottles are stacked between two rows of chicken wire then covered with three layers of concrete mixed with sand. The Guatemalan government will pay for teachers and the concrete walls and roof of the school, so it's up to the village to raise the inner walls. They built walls for 3 classrooms in that span of time! Aside from the work, they were welcomed and immersed in their culture. One day they were able to tour ancient ruins. There are about 386 elementary students who share 6 classrooms, going half a day year round. There are only 15 in grades 7-9. There is no school for the junior high students. Sadly, there is little opportunity for further education in their area. To see pictures, you can check out this link. Those of you not able to make it, we missed you! |
